Tim acquired this Lincoln Inauguration Badge this week. He is not sure of its value or if it is an original and would appreciate any help from knowledgeable collectors. He was told that the item belonged to an "old ladies husband" along with other Lincoln items he collected. He does not believe it is a ferro and believes it has brush marks on the picture like someone brushed the gel coat on the picture, and wonders if this is normal.

Is it real? Is it a fake? If he sells it will he get enough for a Mcdonald's hamburger or a week in Paris? If you can help, or would like to make an offer to purchase, please click on the "comment" button or email us at appraisals@loriferber.com
Looks like a 1909 piece to me - probably a Taft inaugural piece - 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. Looks like a celluloid with foxing, so probably only around $30 in this condition.

I agree with Ron. The patent on the celluloid badges was issued after 1890. Many celluloids with Lincoln's picture were produced for the centennial of his birth in 1909.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely an early 20th century item. Could have been for any Republican president's inauguration ranging from TR to Hoover. If someone brushed anything on the cello or medal badge, they diminished its value. I'd place the value at 4 or 5 McDonald's hamburgers...with fries and a drink.
